Can Brain Injury Cause Mental Illness?

I’ve been asked a question, “Can brain injury cause mental illness?”  Well, first you have to look at mental illness.  There’s some mental illness that is personality disorders where the person has suffered from something, some attachment disorder that began early in life – traumatic brain injury – but that’s not what we’re talking about.  But very, very often traumatic brain injury and mental illness in the form of anxiety and depression, very often we see people that have traumatic brain injury suffer profoundly from anxiety and depression.  So to that extent traumatic brain injury is related to those diagnoses of mental illness and anxiety and depression.
