What is a Herniated Disc?
A common injury in accident cases is a “herniated disc.” The spine is made up of interlocking bones that surround the spinal cord, called “vertebrae.” In between each vertebrae is a disc; if your spine is stressed or injured, one or more discs may bulge out and press on the nerves in your spinal cord. This causes severe pain, which may be felt in the neck and/or the back.
Most surgeons first try injecting pain-killing, anti-inflammation drugs into the area surrounding the disc. If this does not relieve the pain, then the surgeon may remove the disc and fuse together the two vertebrae the disc had separated. This is a serious operation.
