School Bus Backs into Parked Car

As children every day ride the bus to school, one of the fears of parents is that bus getting into an accident. Bus drivers are trained very well before they’re allowed to transport children, but the sheer number of buses on the roads makes accidents inevitable. According to the NHTSA, there were 1,236 fatal school transportation accidents between 2001 and 2010. This number includes drivers. This was 0.34% of the total 363,893 fatal crashes that happened in that time span, which is quite a good record. In 2010 specifically, 16 people died in a school bus during a crash, six drivers and 10 children. 113 more were either pedestrians or in other vehicles.

However, a school bus crash doesn’t have to be fatal for it to be a cause of worry. Take a case that happened this week. A man driving a school bus carrying 68 children was backing up and hit a parked car. No one was injured in that collision at the time of the report. However, it is possible that injuries might crop up later in the form of headaches or an ache in the body. Whiplash is rare on school buses because of the very high seats, but it can happen.

When parents turn their children over to school officials, they are supposed to take care of them like a parent would. Thus, many parents choose to seek compensation when their children are injured while in the custody of the school. If your child has been injured in a school accident outside of normal activities, you may want to consider speaking with a lawyer.
