Helicopter Crash Investigation is Completed

Concluding an investigation ongoing for the past 16 months, the National Transportation Safety Board have determined the cause of a November 2012 police helicopter crash in Atlanta that killed two officers. The chopper was flying very low with a bright searchlight on while searching for a missing 9-year-old child. The pilot did not see a power pole and wires, and the helicopter’s landing gear caught on the wires. The chopper crashed, bursting into flames and killing both officers on board.

The investigation’s conclusions are consistent with the opinions of witnesses who saw the helicopter flying low, and the police department at the time who stated that the aircraft was in good running condition.  Weather was also clear the day of the crash.

In tragic accidental deaths like this one, the families of the deceased can struggle in many ways, with few resources for help. The pain of losing a loved one is difficult enough on its own, but there is also often significant loss of income, making once-routine tasks burdensome.  Unhelpful insurance companies, if they get involved at all, are typically only interested in protecting themselves.
